The Firefighter Program is a combined effort of the Anthis Career Center,
the Fort Wayne Fire Department, and the Allen County Volunteer Fire Department.
The Program is a proficiency based program, preparing students to pass
the national accreditation test for Firefighter one and two. Instruction
is provided by certified and experienced firefighters. |

Captain Louis Roy and Captain Jeff Berning share teaching responsibilities
for the firefighter class. Both instructors work full-time with the FWFD
at their assigned stations, and assist on occasion with the teaching of
the new recruit classes for the FWFD Academy Program.
Program Goals
- To provide students with a clear understanding of the physical and mental requirements and the hands-on skills necessary to become candidates for area Fire Departments
- To prepare students to meet the requirements of local Fire Department hiring processes
- To allow students to earn dual credits toward an associate degree in fire science
at Ivy Tech State College
Program Description
The Firefighter Program is designed for high school students seeking a
career in Fire Service. This course is based on guidelines from the National
Fire Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
Firefighting and other Fire service careers are exciting, challenging,
and rewarding. They provide a good salary, benefits, and are secure jobs
for the future.
1 Year Program
Juniors and Seniors
The class is located at the Public Safety Acaemy at 7602 Patriot
Crossing. Bussing is limited. It is best that students are able to drive or
get to the class site on their own.
Lab Equipment
Students will work with real fire fighting equipment. They will use and
study the following throughout the course: extinguishers, protective equipment,
SCBA (breathing apparatus), ropes and knots, rescue techniques, ladders,
hoses, ventilation, water supply, station visits with apparatus and equipment
practice, sprinkler systems, salvage and overhaul, alarms and communications,
hazardous materials, electronic and gas hazards, pump operation, and infectious
diseases and control.
Curriculm
TEAMWORK and RESPONSIBILITY are stressed throughout this program. Students
will study at the Public Safety Academy, and will visit area fire stations.
They will be working with "real fire equipment and on fire trucks and ladders."
Students have a complete set of gear: helmet, coat, bunker pants, gloves, boots, and hoods.
Criteria For Selection:
Physical agility screening/Personal interview
High school junior/senior
Physucal exam
Able to carry, or drag 175 pounds
Tacher recommendations
Reading: at grade level
Math: at grade level
Insurance (Must purchase school insurance)
The program:
- teaches what it takes mentally and physically to be a firefighter
- the classroom work consist of a 1000 page textbook with tests and workbook assignments
- teaches the physical agility requirements necessary to gain entrance into an Academy
- Provides practice in confidence course, required to successfully complete the course
- provides experience in a flashover chamber
- teaches auto extrication
- teaches the use of all equipment on the fire trucks, including climbing a 100' ladder truck
- teaches how to rescue downed firefighters and civilians from burning buildings
